Sunday 18th May - Worldwide Day of Botanical Art
9am - We start the day with a Powhiri (a formal, ceremonial Māori welcome). If you wish to attend, please be outside the front of the visitor centre at 8.45am.
2pm - 'Te korowai o Papatuanuku – the Cloak of the Earth Mother', a talk by Dr Nick Roskruge -
Dr Nick Roskruge (Atiawa, Ngāti Tama-ariki me Ngāti Porou) retired Professor of Ethnobotany and Horticulture, Massey University, and Research Fellow with Nga Pae o Maramatanga (the National Maori Research Centre) and the Deputy Director for Māori and Pasifika at Bioprotection Aotearoa, a centre for Research Excellence based at Lincoln University.
'Te korowai o Papatuanuku – the Cloak of the Earth Mother'.
Aotearoa/New Zealand is home to an extraordinary population of native, endemic and exotic
species and other biology. This presentation will focus on introducing a selection of traditional foods which are still valued for their contribution to mana or status for both individuals and the community. It will also
cover some of the cultural and artistic expressions related to these same foods.
At Auckland Botanic Gardens, over the weekend of 17 & 18 May, we will be having a series of artist demonstrations in the Library Foyer - so far we have:

In the library there will be a selection of botanical art books on display.
Over the duration of the Auckland exhibition there are a series of workshops.

About this Exhibition
Organized by the Botanical Art Society of New Zealand and Auckland Botanic Gardens and supported by Friends of Auckland Botanic Gardens, New Zealand’s exhibition will take place from March 30 – July 1, 2018 at Auckland Botanical Garden. The exhibition will then travel around the country; including: Wellington Botanic Gardens (August 1 - September 9), Millennium Gallery, Blenheim (November 3 - December 9) and then to Christchurch, dates will be announced soon. Entries have been juried by a team consisting of Sri Benham, Dr. Ross Ferguson, and Rebecca Stanley. A total of 56 artworks will hang at Auckland Botanic Gardens from 42 artists, including 3 students from secondary schools in Auckland, have been accepted from a field of 98 entries. New Zealand flax is a very tough and fibrous plant, with spiky flower stalks. Birds and insects love the brilliant flowers filled with nectar, and its seedpods are long, twisted, and coppery in color. It has become a popular, dramatic flower in cultivation.
